Moving Mountains

Sohail Sakhi
Sohail is a high-altitude alpinist, solo trekker, geographer, and expedition leader who has pushed his limits on some of the world's most formidable peaks. His climbs include the summit of K2, Gasherbrum I (G1), Gasherbrum II (G2), Manaslu, and a winter attempt on Batura I—one of the last great challenges in Himalayan mountaineering. He has also summited Nanga Parbat as part of a solo-style team with no O2 and no porter assistance as well as summited Island Peak in Nepal. His alpine-style ascent of Spantik (7,027m) stands as a testament to his minimalist approach to mountaineering.
As a geographer, Sohail’s deep understanding of landscapes, glaciers, and remote terrains enhances his exploration, allowing him to document and analyze the ever-changing geography of high-altitude environments. He is also one of the few high-altitude photographers, capturing the raw beauty and brutal reality of extreme environments. With extensive training in ice and rock climbing, he has honed his skills in technical ascents, making him a well-rounded climber. His long term project of the Great Karakoram Trail will be launching in 2026.
Beyond his personal achievements, he is committed to sharing his knowledge with the local mountaineering community, helping nurture the next generation of climbers. Over the years, he has collaborated with several international companies from Europe and the U.S., gaining experience in diverse expedition styles and high-altitude logistics.
As the driving force behind Moving Mountains, Sohail is shaping the future of adventure tourism in Hunza, bringing a raw, self-sufficient, and alpine-style trekking philosophy to the region. He believes in moving mountains—both physically and metaphorically—to inspire change in society.
Sohail's climbs have been featured extensively on ExplorersWeb, most recently his winter attempt of Batura.
Sohail guides many of our trips with a special focus on K2 Expedition, Nanga Parbat Expedition, Snow Lake & Hispar La, K2 Base Camp & Gondogoro La & Spantik Climbing (7027m) as well as any custom expeditions.
